Another Day to Remember

12 September 2008

Old Timers Day - hanging out at the General Store The 29th Old Timer's Day took place on the last weekend of August. This festival is just one day and is always the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. It is definitely worth making a trip to Rabbit Hash for!

There were food vendors here selling lots of goodies -- everything from bean soup to stuffed sweet potatoes, hot-off-the-grill burgers to corn on the cob.

Old Timers Day - clown There were crafters selling photographs of Rabbit Hash, paintings, quilts and jewelry. There were tribal dancers,  clowns making animal balloons, and clay pot experts showing us how to throw a pot on a wheel.

A dozen model-T Fords visited Rabbit Hash and almost that many bands played.

The stage was set with the Ohio River as the backdrop and the music brought the crowd to life. The Swells from Lexington sent their sweet, sweet sounds trumpeting down the river and into the crisp, late summer air. Willie Eames, also from Lexington, awed the audience with his Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker inspired sound. What a lot of sound coming out of one man!

Old Timers Day - Jake Speed and the Freddies Of course, we had Cincinnati's own Jake Speed and the Freddies, The Stardevils and Strawboss doing their usual great stuff.

Overall, it was a great day of music. So many musicians and so little time! Ben Pedigo and Forest Utley of Gunpowder Creek played their wonderful bluegrass music on the front porch of the General Store. By the way, now they are selling their CD's here in Rabbit Hash.

Anna Scala kept all the kids in the barn occupied with her delightfully playful sound (I saw quite a few adults tapping their toes in there as well!) And the "Barnival" was a huge hit with the young ones.

otd2008-dancers.jpgIt truely was a spectacular display of talented musicians, artists, dancers, and storytellers. And the crowd was like one big family.

This annual festival lasts for only one day and that is just not enough. But, thankfully, we still have barn dances and Sundays behind the stove (starting in November) to carry us through until next year.

For those of you who took photos of Old Timers day and would like to share them, please send them to the webmaster to be posted on this site.

Thanks for bringing your energy and spirit to Rabbit Hash and making the 29th Annual Old Timer's Day another one to remember.
