 Volunteer Don Clare
On Saturday, April 28th, you might have seen several people walking along Lower River Rd wearing neon green shirts in the early morning sunshine. These volunteers climbed out of bed early for the Boone County Great American Cleanup, a program designed to clean up the banks of the Ohio River.
The Rabbit Hash Historical Society, headed by Don Clare, organized a "clean up" group specifically for Rabbit Hash. Although some volunteers were local residents, still others came from nearby towns such as Verona, Union, and Hebron. What they all had in common is their love for Rabbit Hash and happily donated their time and energy to keep it beautiful.
Over a hot lunch provided for the volunteers, we all compared notes on what we found. The most common items were beverage bottles and cans, but we also found quite a number of flip-flops and other types of shoes, all kinds of balls including beach balls, tires, styrofoam, broken fishing poles, shampoo, buckets, propane tanks, and motor oil containers. Some were so old and muddy that they weren't even identifiable.
According to Mary Shinkle, coordinator of the project, the preliminary numbers of the amount of garbage removed from the river banks is estimated at 3 tons over a 2 1/2 mile stretch of Lower River Rd. Actual numbers are coming soon... And it matters because for every mile cleaned, the Rabbit Hash Historical Society receives $100 from Boone County Solid Waste. Not bad considering that either way everyone win!
There's going to be another clean up scheduled for June 16th. If you're interested in volunteering, watch for further postings on this website for details.
Thanks to everyone who participated!
