The following is a message from Kelly Chapman of Boone County Solid Waste:
Organized across the U.S. by the Ohio River Sanitation Commission, the Ohio River Sweep is a one day river shoreline cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and some of its tributaries. This year, River Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2009 from 8:00 AM until Noon (weather permitting.)
As in past years, we will have volunteers meeting at the Rabbit Hash General Store to collect debris from the banks of the river. After specific safety instructions, they will then branch out from this central location to pick up garbage all along the riverbank. Each participant must sign a release of liability waiver and minors must have a waiver form signed by their parent or guardian. Because of this, there is no liability to property owners.
Garbage that is washed up along the river is a problem for all who live near and love our shoreline. The Ohio River Sweep is a great opportunity to beautify this are of our community and, in addition, to teach our young volunteers the importance of community pride. We all can make a difference.
If you would like to lend a hand, please let us know! Each volunteer will get a free t-shirt, a tasty lunch, and might even win a prize. Feel free to call me at 859-334-3629 with any questions regarding this information or to inquire about any of our programs.
For more information regarding this event, see this article: 2009 River Sweep is Coming!
Thanks for caring about our river, environment and community.
