The 2007 Ohio River Sweep is coming on Saturday, June 16th, from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Volunteers are needed to help cleanup the Ohio riverbank in Boone County and create a cleaner community for all of us. The Ohio River Sweep is an annual cleanup program organized by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, an interstate water pollution agency for the Ohio River Valley. Saturday’s cleanup will involve volunteers from all along the river who are willing to donate their time to improve their communities and our region. The Ohio River Sweep program will donate to the Rabbit Hash Historical Society $100 for every mile of trash clean-up done in Rabbit Hash. Help preserve the beauty of our community and support the ongoing efforts of the non profit 501-c-3 Rabbit Hash Historical Society at the same time. Volunteer today! There are four locations this year located in Boone County, Kentucky:
T-shirts, trash bags, gloves, and drinks will be provided at each location. We will also provide a deliciously free lunch and handsome t-shirts for all participating volunteers! Show your pride in our county and our river... Volunteer to help clean up Rabbit Hash, KY! Saturday, April 28, 2007, was LITTER-ally a bad day for solid waste along the Kentucky shore of the Ohio River in Rabbit Hash. An all-volunteer force joined in with Rabbit Hash Historical Society and the Boone County Public Works Department and Solid Waste Director, Mary Shinkle, to once again participate in the Great American Clean-Up, that annual rite of Spring in our beloved Boone County.
Collectively, we were able to account for over 3 tons of trash and garbage collected along Lower River Road and the riverbank, from the town of Rabbit Hash all the way down to the East Bend bottoms area, about two and a half to three miles total. That is 6,000 pounds of debris! That is 96,000 one ounce servings of solid pollution! Now imagine taking that yield for our isolated 3-mile tract and multiply that by every other 3-mile tract in our neighborhood, then by every neighborhood in our county, then by every county in our state, and then by every state in our country. No wonder we have global warming! All those discarded beer bottles and cans lying in direct contact with the sun absorb and retain an awful lot of heat, wouldn't you think? By removing those 6,000 pounds of heat reservoirs, I bet we were able to cool down "The Center of the Universe" by at least one one-hundredth of a degree. Now do the math again. How much could we cool down our earth globally? If these doomsday theorists and the panic-inciting, sensationalist-media chicken-littles would just lay off this Global Warming theory and concentrate on the Global Harming facts of the untoward effects of solid waste littering the environment, we would be a lot better off. Plus, we could even see, feel, hear, smell and touch the difference we make in our environment. Don't believe me? Come join us on Saturday, June 16, 2007 for the annual Ohio River Sweep and witness the difference for yourselves. Don Clare, Jr. Rabbit Hash Historical Society Write yer comment |
